    Ureteroscopy – Niramayaa Superspeciality Hospital

The pain of a kidney or ureteric stone is often described as one of the most intense pains a person can experience. Sudden, severe pain in the back or side that spreads to the lower abdomen or groin, along with nausea, vomiting, or blood in the urine, can bring life to a complete halt.

While many small stones pass on their own, larger stones or stones causing blockage, infection, or persistent pain need treatment. Ureteroscopy (URS) is a modern, minimally invasive procedure that allows doctors to remove stones from the ureter and kidney through the natural urinary passage, without any cuts or scars.

At Niramayaa Superspeciality Hospital, our experienced urologists perform ureteroscopy using advanced endoscopic equipment and laser technology, offering effective stone removal with minimal discomfort and a quick recovery.

    What Is Ureteroscopy?

Ureteroscopy is a procedure in which a thin, flexible or semi-rigid telescope called a ureteroscope is passed through the urethra and bladder into the ureter (the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder) and, if needed, up into the kidney.

The ureteroscope has a camera that allows the urologist to see the stone clearly. The stone is then either removed whole using a tiny basket or broken into fine fragments using a laser (laser lithotripsy), which are then removed or passed naturally in the urine.

    FAQ’s

    Is ureteroscopy painful?
The procedure is performed under anaesthesia, so you will not feel pain. Mild discomfort while urinating may be experienced for a few days afterwards.
Will there be any cuts or scars?
No. Ureteroscopy is performed through the natural urinary passage, so there are no incisions or scars.
Why is a DJ stent placed?
A stent helps urine drain smoothly from the kidney to the bladder, prevents blockage from swelling or small fragments, and supports healing. It is temporary and removed later.
How soon can I go home?
Most patients go home within 24 hours of the procedure.
    Can kidney stones come back?
Yes, stones can recur. Drinking enough water, following dietary advice, and regular follow-up significantly reduce the risk.
