Kidney stones come in all shapes and sizes. While small stones may pass on their own or be treated with simpler procedures, large or complex kidney stones often need a more advanced approach. Left untreated, these stones can cause severe pain, repeated infections, blockage of urine flow, and even permanent kidney damage.

PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) is a minimally invasive keyhole surgery and one of the most effective treatments for large kidney stones. Through a small opening in the back, the stone is accessed directly, broken into fragments, and removed, often in a single procedure.

At Niramayaa Superspeciality Hospital, our experienced urologists perform PCNL using advanced endoscopic equipment and modern stone-breaking technology, helping patients achieve high stone clearance with less pain and faster recovery than traditional open surgery.

    FAQ’s

    Is PCNL a major surgery?
PCNL is a minimally invasive keyhole procedure. It is less invasive than open surgery, with a smaller wound, less pain, and quicker recovery.
    Is PCNL painful?
The surgery is performed under anaesthesia, so you will not feel pain. Post-operative discomfort is usually well controlled with medicines.
    How big is the cut?
The incision is usually about 1 cm or less, and even smaller in mini PCNL.
Will all the stones be removed in one surgery?
In most cases, PCNL clears the stones in a single procedure. Very large or complex stones, such as staghorn stones, may occasionally need a second procedure.
What is the difference between PCNL and RIRS?
PCNL removes stones through a small opening in the back and is ideal for large stones. RIRS uses a flexible scope through the natural urinary passage, without any cut, and is better suited for small to medium-sized stones. Your urologist will recommend the best option for you.
