    Cystectomy– Niramayaa Superspeciality Hospital

Ovarian cysts are very common, and most are harmless. Many form naturally during the menstrual cycle and disappear on their own without causing any problems. However, some cysts grow larger, cause pain, persist for months, or carry other risks that need treatment.

When surgery is needed, an ovarian cystectomy allows the cyst to be removed while preserving the healthy ovary. This is especially important for women who wish to protect their hormonal health and fertility.

At Niramayaa Superspeciality Hospital, our experienced gynaecologists perform ovarian cystectomy using advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques wherever possible, helping you recover faster with less pain and minimal scarring.

    What Is an Ovarian Cyst?

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled or semi-solid sac that forms on or inside an ovary.

    Functional Cysts:
The most common type, formed during the normal menstrual cycle. They usually resolve on their own within a few weeks to months.
    Dermoid Cysts:
Contain different types of tissue, such as hair, fat, or skin. They do not go away without surgery.
    Endometriomas (Chocolate Cysts):
Formed due to endometriosis and may cause pain and fertility problems.
    Cystadenomas:
Develop from the surface of the ovary and can grow quite large.
    Haemorrhagic Cysts:
Cysts that contain blood, often causing sudden pain.

    Types of Surgery

    1
    Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy
The preferred approach for most cysts. Performed through a few small incisions using a camera and fine instruments. It offers less pain, minimal scarring, a shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery.
    2
    Open Ovarian Cystectomy
May be required for very large cysts, cysts with suspicious features, or when laparoscopy is not suitable.
    3
    Oophorectomy
In some situations, such as very large cysts that have replaced most of the ovary, ovarian torsion with a non-viable ovary, recurrent cysts in older women, or suspicion of cancer, removal of the ovary may be the safer option. This is discussed with you in detail beforehand.

    FAQ’s

Do all ovarian cysts need surgery?
No. Most ovarian cysts are harmless and resolve on their own. Surgery is recommended only for cysts that are large, persistent, symptomatic, or of a specific type.
Will I lose my ovary during cystectomy?
In most cases, no. The goal of cystectomy is to remove only the cyst and preserve the healthy ovary. Removal of the ovary is considered only when medically necessary.
Can ovarian cysts come back after surgery?
Some types, such as endometriomas, can recur. Your doctor may recommend medication or regular follow-up to reduce this risk.
Can I get pregnant after ovarian cystectomy?
Yes. Many women conceive naturally after cystectomy. Your doctor will guide you on when it is safe to try.
    Are ovarian cysts cancerous?
Most ovarian cysts are not cancerous. However, certain features on ultrasound or blood tests may need further evaluation. All removed cysts are sent for laboratory testing to confirm their nature.
